Ted Hogan

Ted Hogan was inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 1996.

Ted Hogan was Canada's best known stock car racer in the rough-and-tumble days of the sport. Known as "Terrible Ted" or "Mighty Mite", Hogan chalked up a record 37 feature wins and a number of track titles at the CNE Speedway between 1954 and his death in plane crash in 1960. Although there was racing at the CNE for five more years, no one ever matched Hogan's mark.

I wrenched for ted for a couple of years at the beginning of his racing. 52-54. Had to quit. racing 6 nights a week became too much for me as I was just getting a business going. The most memorable time was just before he died. I was at his gas station and he asked if I wanted to go for a ride in his plane. I had to decline as I had a business appointment. The next day Doug Duncan phoned me advising that Ted has died in the plane crash and the guy who went with him, former racer Bruce Tanner was also killed. There but for the Grace of God go I. His funeral was the biggest I had ever seen. He had a tremendous following. Doug started wrenching for Ted about 1956. This is were he got his start in building cars.

Here are a few pictures of my Grandfather, Ted Hogan. My Mom, Wanetta was Ted's oldest daughter. I never met Ted, as I was not born until 1969, but my Mom and late Grandmother (Bernice) would tell me exciting stories of his victories and competitiveness.
Hope you enjoy his pictures.
Sincerely,   Richard Guest
